About

Senior data engineer. Twenty years in. Currently in New Orleans, writing here because the explanations on the internet are worse.

John Ratté is a data engineer who writes here when he has something worth saying.

He has a day job. This site is not his employer’s. Opinions, jokes, and bad takes here belong to him alone.

Background

John first learned he could make a living with SQL queries in 2006 when a Seattle-based consulting firm hired him to build SSIS packages, SSAS cubes, and SSRS reports. All of these tools now seem like the punchcards the first computer ran on, but they’re all still alive and working today.

Over the next 20 years, he moved through almost every industry imaginable: healthcare, automotive, aerospace, food and beverage, financial services, government services, and he’s 99% sure one of his clients was actively involved in the adult film industry so he’s counting that one too.
